Are aviation accidents on the rise or still in decline?

On Behalf of | Jan 16, 2026 | Aviation Law |

If you have been following aviation accident news over the last year, there have been some high-profile incidents. For example, a regional jet and a Black Hawk helicopter collided and crashed into the Potomac River last year. Accidents like these draw national attention and often cause people to question aircraft safety.

But what do the statistics actually show? Are aviation accidents becoming more common, or are they still in decline? Aviation has long been considered one of the safest forms of transportation, far safer than driving a car. Is that still true?

Accident totals are still dropping

When you look at overall statistics from recent years, aviation remains very safe, and accidents continue to become less common. For instance, there were 623 aviation accidents in the United States between January and July 2025. During the same time period in 2024, there were 729 accidents. Despite increased media attention in 2025, there were approximately 100 fewer crashes during this comparable stretch of time.

Reports do show that fatalities have increased in certain years. However, researchers caution that this does not necessarily mean accidents are happening more often or that aviation is becoming more dangerous. A single major incident can significantly increase fatality numbers, even though it still represents only one event. In that sense, aviation has not inherently become more dangerous in recent years.

Addressing complex aviation accident cases

Aviation accident cases can be very complex when they do occur. It is important for those involved to understand what legal steps they need to take and what rights they have after such an incident.
